Easter Eggstravaganza and Joint Club Day

With the start of the summer weather for both of these events the younger members made the most of Maesgwm trails.  On Saturday with a hunt for clues and plenty of tasks to do before the reward of a chocolate egg.

Tuesday saw Clwb Beicio Dwyfor, Clwb Beicio Mynydd Dyffryn Conwy and Dreigiau Coed y Brenin Dragons get together for skills tests that included limbo, highest bunny hop, longest wheelie ( how can they do that far?) sumo plus others, time trials and a ride after lunch. The older ones going around the trails on the Maesgwm side and the younger ones riding the Minor Tawr.

Thanks to all that came along to the events and to the coaches, leaders and organizers from the three clubs for making it a success.

Ride at CyB Saturday 28th March 2015.

With a number of our regular group away racing in the British National XC series a small group met at CyB on a very wet Saturday morning. As we had all enjoyed Wednesday’s night ride around last week’s Gravity Enduro course we decide to give it a go in more challenging conditions. The rain did ease off so we could take our coats off but you have got to say it is not often you need to empty the water out of your shoes whilst out on the trails but you did today. Despite this we all had a good time.

Through the Heart of Darkness.

It’s been a great winter this year as we’ve had some fabulous evenings in the dark at Coed y Brenin on the Wednesday Night Rides. Thanks to all the youngsters (and oldsters) who came along for the ride, and to the parents and grandparents who ferried riders through the cold winter months!

We finish with the Heart of Darkness as the Unbearable Lightness of summer takes over. Roll on next winter!

I’m sure that summer will be a treat, and the warmth and light will make the riding easier, but I’m already looking forward to next winter!

Antifreeze

Joe from Beics Brenin had set an interesting 11km course with enough climbs and descents to satisfy any rider. With their new chip system Beics Brenin were able to run a staggered start and give a choice of the number of laps you wanted to do.

Although the weather started off OK it was hailing and raining by mid-day meaning most riders got wet.

I rode my planned two laps in 2hours 48 minutes and was 90th out of 120 and 1st over 60yr old in the 23km category. Feeling pleased I checked where other over 60’s were only to find that one was 12th fastest overall for 3 laps and was faster for 3 laps than I was for  2 laps. Oh dear going out training now.

Junior Antifreeze Report.

There was a good turnout of 29 riders for the Dragons Winter Go-Race  Junior Antifreeze Enduro styled event at Masegwm Coed y Brenin on Saturday 28th February 2015.

With better weather than the forecast suggested the riders had a choice of route depending on experience with many going for the black with its rooty/rocky climbs and descents. After the enduro it was across to the Visitor Centre where with the boiler fixed hot chocolate was given to all the competitors with Andy Braund of NRW presenting Welsh Cycling medals and certificates to the riders.

Thanks to all those who contributed to a successful day.

Club Ride at CyB Sat 21.02.2015

The club was greeted on their arrival at CyB by a heavy hailstorm turning everything white and icy for our start. Fortunately the weather improved during the ride and coats and even jumpers were soon going into backpacks. MBR trail was our goal this week with everyone looking forward to its rocky descents. As Uncle Fester is still closed we backtracked after False Teeth to ride Lurch and Pugsley’s Bottom then back across Beginning of the End and down to finish on the Black Steps. After dinner it was up to Y Ffowndri to improve our jump skills.

Night Ride 18.02.2015

The half-term crowds were almost all gone when our usual night ride group set off led once again by Steve.

Straight into single track we headed out to Dream Time and as darkness fell we crossed the river to Big Dug.  It was up hill then with a quick stop at a very “Spooky” Bothy according to the kids, then on to Beefy. We rode past the “Café in the woods” (but they were shut) and blasted back to the visitor centre.

Group Ride 14.02.2015 CyB

The Dragons were at CyB this week-end for an afternoon ride on another dry winter’s day. The Gremlins were waiting for us however, with one puncture on the carpark and another 100 metres along Badger with repairs complete it was along Ponderosa down Dream Time and with Uncle Fester still shut for repairs we rode on to Herman and then a quick blast to rattle down Old Pink Heifer. The youngsters then voted to climb to Beginning of the End via the steep tarmac road (to make the older ones suffer I think). Those same Gremlins were still near the V.C. as they claimed another pinch flat we thought it was because they were jealous of the riders’ new helmet. This also gave an excuse for a bike swop which was ok for some but awkward for those over 6 foot on a small 26” bike.

A smaller group   went out on a ride along the Blue. They reported they had a good time but the trail was a fairly crowded.
